- 10 February 1992
- Creation (UK), Sire (ROW)
Released in advance of the band’s second album, Going Blank Again, this eight and a half minute single crashed into the top 10 of the UK charts in the first week of release the same week that the band played a sold-out hometown show at the Oxford Apollo.
Although a four and a half minute edit was sent out as a radio promo the track received no daytime radio play but the band had to edit it down further into a three and a half minute version for a mimed performance on Top of the Pops and a three minute live version for The Word.
Leave Them All Behind entered the charts at number 9 in the same week that the Jesus and Mary Chain’s Reverence went in at 10 and Primal Scream’s Moving On Up stood at 11. Quite a special moment for Creation Records because of this with the added bonus that this was also the label’s first Top 10 hit.
The version of Chrome Waves on this EP was a different version from the string-laden track on Going Blank Again. Part of the reason that this EP has only 3 tracks on it is because Grasshopper is an 11 minute instrumental and in 1992 a “single” would only qualify for the charts if it was less than 24 minutes in total.
